When I was around eight I created my first ad. It was an amazing piece of hand drawn, mixed medium (crayon and scented marker) concept for Aussie Hair Spray featuring a woman with fabulously un-mussed hair in the midst of a lightening storm. Quite proud of my wax-laden, cherry and grape scented masterpiece, I found the address from the back of the hairspray bottle and mailed it off.
While cherry and grape scented markers are undoubtedly amazing (and frankly, under utilized in todays advertising market), my current medium of choice has expanded a tad. I have been loving the challenge that todays ad world brings in the way of video, social media, and digitally-integrated campaigns because they require both big picture thinking and detailed execution.
I’m overseeing the campaign and creative projects for Cambria, Sun Country, and all the sub-brands they bring along for the ride. Our team operates with a core staff of designers, writers, video staff, project managers and a bevy of freelance support.
I primarily created and reviewed work for the SuperValu client and their six sub-brands focused on printed ad circular marketing, which sounds horribly boring…but I actually had a fair amount of opportunities to explore reinventing the layout and strategy behind how to leverage the circular in an ever digitally focused market place. That boiled down to a lot of research and a lot of design exploration, which just happen to be some of my favorite things about being a designer.
Graphic/Digital Design Supervisor
Lifetouch Portrait Studios
Within the portrait studios division I worked on all of the various store brands Lifetouch owned; JCPenney Portraits, Target Portrait Studio, Flash Digital Portraits and Cilento Photography. There were a lot of really main stream projects, but my favorite thing about working here were the random ‘big dreaming’ projects including concept stores, new products, and go-to-market strategy pitches to executive staff.
Coalesce Marketing & Design, Inc.
I was the fourth staff member at this little start-up, which, at the point I was at in my career, could not have been a more perfect experience for me. We were two designers, a writer and an account manager building a business. I was getting to design, concept, and be in new business pitches. I got to experiment in web design and video work, experience the stress of things going wrong and the joy of everything falling into place. This little start up is still going strong today and I take pride in being there at the start.
There was a little bit of design and a little bit of production, but a whole lot of stressing out about making the 4pm FedEx proof shipment deadline.
Student Life Promotions
This was a great job to finish off the last portion of my senior year at. As a student designer I created brochures and materials all focused on student life on campus.
